Many people dream of a career in writing. They dream of sitting under a tree somewhere, typing away, blissfully relaxed and at ease. They dream of getting big paychecks and having their photographs grace the book-jacket of the next best-selling book. They imagine themselves interviewed by Oprah, responding to her questions of how they ever conjured up such a fantastic storyline. However, the real truth is that a freelance career in writing is not easy to achieve. What follows are three myths about a freelance career in writing that may surprise you, and which you should know BEFORE you quit your day-job.
Myth Number 1. A freelance career in writing is thrilling. Of course, having your name in print is wonderful. Knowing others are reading YOUR works is thrilling. But, the actual writing part is FAR FROM GLAMOROUS. Going through "writers block" is awful. Working with editors who wish to cut up your carefully crafted work is upsetting. Establishing your writing name is complicated and stressful... let alone more challenging than you might ever envision.
Myth Number 2. A freelance career in writing is something that ANYONE could have. Yes, there are HUNDREDS of writing jobs online available for the taking, but the unfortunate reality is that if you wish to make a decent salary, you will have to a) be a a writer better than most, b) understand MARKETING, c) work more than you thought you would, d) develop very tough skin, AND e) know how to uncover the profitable writing markets.
Myth Number 3. A career in writing is limited to writing books or articles Untrue. Utterly so. Although writing novels, non-fictional books, or articles are probably the most common ways for earning money with your writing, there are other, less known ways too. Review writing, blogging, and writing web site content, but to name just a few.
A career in writing will have great appeal to those who love playing with words. But, remember that for a lot of people it is not the dream job that they are probably picturing.
Never forget, however, that YOU may be one of the few to make it big. Don't take chances on your success. You can give yourself a break and learn from an experienced writer about how to earn a LOT of money with your writing.
